Brief History

In May of 1950, 17 Masons met for the 1st organizational meeting of the Lodge. Pro-tem organizational officers were chosen and Committees were appointed to select a name and find a meeting location. From 16 possibilities, the name Joppa was selected. Harmony Temple became the meeting place, and Joppa Lodge was born. Many of the original members worked for the Bureau of Reclamation.

In 1990, at the suggestion of then Grand Lecturer RWB Bill Wood, Joppa began the process of becoming a Daylight Lodge. Joppa is currently the only all-Daylight Lodge in Colorado.

Why a Daylight Lodge?

It is the firm belief of Joppa Daylight Lodge that, as Masons, we should provide an opportunity for all Masons to attend Lodge meetings and receive the continuing benefits of Masonic education and friendship. As our brethren age, many find driving or getting out at night more difficult or worrisome. Others work shifts and are often at work when traditional evening lodges meet.

Others have just too many meetings on too many nights.

The Joppa Experience

Joppa Daylight provides a lodge experience that is exceptional in the Denver area. The friendliness and camaraderie of its members, the proficiency of its officers and the quality of our Masonic education are something that every Mason can appreciate. Joppa Daylight offers an on-going Masonic education program that compares to the Master Craftsman program of the Scottish Rite and other home-study Masonic education programs in other bodies.

Presented in a relaxed discussion format by Masonic scholars, this program is one that new Masons and ÒMasonic SagesÓ alike can enjoy. This exchange of Masonic ideas and experiences truly enhances everyoneÕs understanding of the symbols of Masonry and what we are trying accomplish as Masons. Our discussions focus on the rituals of initiation, passing and raising, and of opening and closing. Why do we do and say these things? Can we use them as a guide in life outside the lodge room? Not only the strict structure, but the symbolic meanings of the rituals are discussed. It is our hope to move the Brethren beyond simple repetition of rote memorizations and have a meaningful spiritual experience each time we do our Masonic work.

At Joppa, we feel that Masonic education is our reason for meeting, so we streamline business wherever possible and get right to it! Knowing that Òthe mind can only absorb what the rear-end can endureÓ, we keep our discussions to a lively 15-30 minutes. Sometimes we have to revisit a subject at several meetings to get it all talked about!

So Visit Us!

Joppa Daylight wants the members of all Lodges to visit us, singly or en masse! The more who attend, the better the meeting!

But MOST important:

If you know of a Brother who may benefit from a daylight meeting, contact him and tell him about Joppa Lodge. Give him the opportunity to enjoy our friendship and Masonic light.

We do not expect all visitors to join our lodge, but we do expect them back!
